The holy water spring at Mary’s house
Before there was a chapel, before there were pilgrims, there was water. The spring beneath the House of Virgin Mary is the reason the house was found — and the place where every prayer we carry comes to rest, a few steps away.

The water that found the house
When the German mystic Anne Catherine Emmerich described the house where the Virgin Mary spent her final years, she was precise about one detail: a spring of fresh water close by. In July 1891, the two priests searching Bülbül Mountain for that house came upon the spring first — and beside it, the ruined stone walls. The water was the landmark. Without it, the house might have stayed lost.
The spring still rises beneath the house today. Its water is channelled to fountain taps in the lower garden, and an old stone cistern beside the house recalls the centuries when water was drawn here bucket by bucket.
What pilgrims do at the spring
They drink. They wash their faces and hands. They fill small bottles to carry home to someone who is ill, or simply to keep on a shelf beside a candle. Some pray the Memorare as they drink; some say nothing at all. The taps sit right beside the wishing wall, so most people do both — a sip of the water, and a folded prayer tied to the wire.
Local tradition holds that the water brings healing and answered prayers. We would rather be honest than grand: the Church treats the spring as a blessing, not a promise, and so do we. What we can tell you is that people have been coming here for the water for well over a century, and that many write to us afterwards with calm in their voices.
Water in the story of faith
It is no accident that a spring stands at the heart of Mary’s house. In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells the woman at the well that whoever drinks the water He gives “will never thirst” (John 4:14), and at the feast in Jerusalem, “rivers of living water will flow from within” those who believe (John 7:38). Springs mark holy places from Lourdes to Ephesus. Here, the water and the wall of prayers stand side by side — the two oldest gestures of pilgrimage: drink, and ask.
